I love fire. It’s good for cold skinnies like me to dream into and warm chilled fingers, toes and bones…

Peaceful, right? Ya wouldn’t know that seconds later there was a squirm, a resounding CRASH!-and voila, glittering, broken-glass-bit laden water running all over the floor. (Note to mommaself: Samdinner in front of the fire, not so bright).
Still, it was a good evening. Sam and I got to burn the wood we hauled home from a construction site and we both love making fires. He tears up and crumples the paper, I stack and light, he oohs and aahs and then…

We burn things!

This may seem like a stupid question (especially since the fireplace clearly shows a log) but you aren’t burning 2 x 4 pieces or any other kind of construction wood scraps are you?
Bad, bad chemical type things are released from burning that stuff.

yikes! I only pick the pieces of wood that clearly have no paint or stain on them… Is that still dangerous?

Some construction wood is treated, which means they actually impregnate the wood with chemicals to make it more weather resistant. Good rule of thumb is any wood that goes on the inside of the house (2 X 4’s inside the walls, for example) are probably safe, but anything outside like deck material or stuff for fences should be avoided… Usually the treated stuff has a dark and/or greenish tint to it (it feels heavier too). You’re probably safe because when you burn that stuff it’s not like invisible carbon monoxide type fumes but nasty chemical stinking smoke.
Just be careful….

Thanks for the advice… avoiding freaky chemicals is always a good thing!
