Had to be, otherwise it would do a backflip. It fires the same mass out the back of the weapon as it does forward from the muzzle. A shell or cannister round forward and the same mass of "ballast" (plastic chips I think) out the back which cancels out the recoil. Sucks to be in front OR behind it.
