They also recently did an experiment at Oxford with a pair of crows named Betty and Abel wherein they presented the birds with the same bait(a bucket of meat out of reach inside a glass tube, just like in the video you just saw if you were web-savvy enough to click on the red words above) and two pieces of wire, one hooked and one straight. Betty grabbed the hooked wire to fish the bucket out, Abel stole the hooked wire from Betty, and rather than giving up, Betty “modified” the straight wire into a hooked wire, and was thus able to hook the bucket, pull it up, and retrieve her snack. Article here.
Hmmm… Wonder what that says about male vs female?
And, it says here, ravens are associated with the Triple Goddess-hurrah! Guess I’m living in the right house.

Check out this incredible slide show my friend Meghann sent me.
I love the gigantic flute playing maiden and the rows of huge snow buddhas and am completely awed by the size of the mighty citadel.
Thanks, Meghann!
What a great christmas!-not only did my wonderful household hold a sumptuous feast and give/receive tons of glorious booty, but my favorite woodland sylph, Sophie, unexpectedly came to visit me.

We had such a delicious, whirling, dancing, drawing, sketchin’, rompin’, stompin’, cuddlin’, heart-to-heart talkin’, kissin’, art-filled visit. Aaaaaaaaah, girl time, precious, precious girl time!

Xmas day even blessed us with a tiny snow storm that lasted just long enough to go for a walk in and then magically melted away.

More pretty sylph pics here.
Woohooooo! My momma Blackbird, is starring in one of Karl Krogstad’s new films at the Seattle Art Museum!
‘The Perfect Show’, a series of short movies, airs on friday, January 4th at 7:15 and 9:00pm at SAM.
You may recognize the fishwife with the magical fish. ![]()
Sophie bought me a slinky new dress. It’s been hanging at the entrance to my eyrie, whispering sultry red vinyl suggestions to me everytime I walk by… Solstice seemed like the the perfect time to slip it on. Click on the pictures to enlarge.
We feasted and danced and rang in the solstice with Seattle’s merry pagans. Jeff Hengst had his giant triptych displayed(with a curtain to protect the innocent) behind a set of two fire and ice sculptures(created by Peter Toms)-large rectangles of ice with fire blazing inside! It was a gorgeous effect.
The ceremony was fabulous, with much drumming and dancing and swooping of owls and other fabulous creatures…
It crescendoed with the burning of the intentions tree. A whirl of dancers lit the tree in a swiftly swirling dance with burning torches.
Very pretty and dramatic-got us up and roaring and stomping and shakin’ our booties-a fine solstice indeed!
In which I invite friends over and we build a city full of strange creatures for dinner. Click on the pictures to enlarge.
Oddly, the kids weren’t much into the creating. I guess they’ve reached the ages when the lure of the laptop is paramount. Though I noticed they were happy enough to participate when it came to the destruction of our fair city with a bombardment of carrot missiles.
But we, the silly adults, raised an awesome city of ham, jicama, mashed ‘taters, radishes, beets, cookies, cheese wheels, chocolates, malt balls, etc. My mom provided mortar in the form of marshmallow fluff and easy cheese(edibility=debatable, stickiness=excellent).
Ben’s car, motoring through town.
Mom’s fabulous Cookie Tower.
Rita’s centipede bug and my lizard.
Delayne’s majestic Rooster Tower, just before it surrendered to gravity.
More dinner sculpture(and the bombing) here.
In an astonishing display of willpower, we managed to pry ourselves out of bed long enough to finally go to the beach.

I’d been wanting to show Delayne some of our pretty local parks, since we have a similar bent for sculpting sand, rocks, snow, whatever comes to hand…
Carkeek beach was full of treasures that day. Brilliant red, rooty, curved driftwood snags to create an arched portal, bulbous, testicular kelp whips, shells and stones…
brick bits and melded brick and mortar hunks, one of which was a perfect face.
More beachy goodness here.
