It's just D kind of tripped me out by jokingly calling me his 'soon-to-be ball n chain'(to-ouch!-an exgirlfriend) and it let loose some turbulent emotional backdraft that formed itself into this comic. So, it's literally about never, ever being viewed as a ball and chain.
I know it's just meant to be a haha funny joke and all, but in my opinion, it's a nasty one and the pain of being thought of that way runs pretty deep.
I guess it's really about breaking out of the roles that are preordained for us in relationships by centuries of societal programming.
Men are taught to fear being locked down, trapped, losing their freedom... Women are taught to feel unsafe and to fear being alone, to cling, cajole, demand-anything to keep that man.
Hence the ball and chain image. If we don't say, no! I will not fall blindly into playing that game, then there we are, trapped. Being the ball is as much of a trap as wearing the chain.
I like the imagery (sp?) and the message. I never really thought about it before, but if I had seen my wife as a ball and chain, I wouldn't have married her. I believe a relationship should be about love, unconditional as it can be. Some people's sons are just plain silly.
Very nice hehe.
That your way of saying you're never ever getting married again?

There's got to be a better way of marriage.

Right on LittleJoe!
Unconditional love. Or as close to it as two mere(stubborn, emotional)humans can get.
That's where it's at.
